🏝️ Favignana

It is the largest of the islands in the Egadi archipelago and, seen from above, is shaped like a butterfly resting on the sea. It is about 10 miles from Trapani, is its capital and is divided into two parts by Mount Santa Caterina, which reaches a height of 300 metres.

Thanks to its geomorphological conformation, the island offers a variety of beaches and rocky stretches. Among the most recommended are the fine, golden sandy beach of Lido Burrone, that of Calamoni and Cala Azzurra. By sea, not to be missed are the suggestive coves of Previto, Faraglioni and Punta Sottile, ideal places for snorkelling.

The most fascinating cove is undoubtedly Cala Rossa: its unique colours manage to provide unforgettable moments, making it one of the most iconic symbols of an Egadi holiday.

Favignana is rich in history and culture: the ancient tuff quarries, true works of art from the past, once represented a primary source of the local economy. The quarries in the Bue Marino, Cala Rossa and Scalo Cavallo areas are worth a visit. Also interesting is the Cave Bianche Hotel, built entirely inside an old quarry belonging to the Gandolfo family. Not to be missed are the suggestive hypogean gardens of Villa Margherita.

The island, which is mostly flat, is easily travelled by bicycle or scooter, making exploration comfortable and pleasant.

Staying in Favignana also means immersing oneself in its history: a visit to the imposing former Florio factory, a symbol of the greatness of the family of the same name that contributed to the economic and social growth of the Favignana community, is not to be missed.

Among the typical dishes, frascatola in brodo stands out. In the morning, a breakfast of hot brioche accompanied by almond or mulberry granita is highly recommended. After a day at sea, there is nothing better than a brioche with ice cream or a hot and cold one enjoyed in the splendid Piazza Matrice, also frequented by fashion designers and celebrities.

Recently, Favignana was chosen by the famous director Christopher Nolan to film some scenes for his next colossal, The Odyssey, due out in July 2026. Actors of the calibre of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Robert Pattinson stayed for about a month on the beautiful Egadi island, attracting tourists and onlookers and turning Favignana into a little Hollywood!
