🏝️ Levanzo
Illuminated by the lighthouses of the island, in the evening, the small town of Levanzo resembles a tiny nativity scene in the middle of the sea, overseen by the natural choreography of a starry sky. The island of Levanzo is 6.5 miles from Trapani and covers approximately 10 sq. km. Its highest point is Pizzo del Monaco at 278 meters. Of considerable archaeological and natural interest is, instead, the Grotta del Genovese, dating back to the Paleolithic-Neolithic era, with its walls covered in graffiti and paintings. Here you can admire some depictions of hunting scenes and figures engaged in ritual dances.
A visit to the Grotta del Genovese is not to be missed.
Levanzo is an island that, from a historical-archaeological point of view, really has a lot to tell. The Grotta del Genovese, discovered in 1949, is a testimony of great value: inside it are preserved graffiti and paintings dating back to the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods, which recount the passage of prehistoric man with extraordinary expressive force. Guarding it with passion is Natale, a historical guide and lover of the place, who accompanies visitors on this fascinating journey through time. His office is located in the island’s main street, and visits can be booked in various ways, depending also on the means chosen to reach the cave.
But Levanzo also boasts a historical legacy from Roman times: in Cala Minnola, in fact, there was a salting plant where the delicious garum was produced. (Garum was a liquid sauce obtained by drying salted fish, much used by the ancient Romans – but also earlier by the Greeks – as a condiment for many dishes).
And if that were not enough, the island’s seabed holds a wealth of archaeological finds, including Roman rostrums and amphorae, confirming its historical and commercial importance. From this point of view, Levanzo is perhaps the most interesting of the Egadi Islands.
So discreet, yet so fascinating, it has attracted the attention of entrepreneurs who are investing in the enhancement of the island, improving the tourist and accommodation offer with high-level facilities.
And the food? The quality of the food is excellent! We recommend dinner in a restaurant overlooking the sea, along the main street.
The island is also extremely convenient to explore: its coves are easily reached on foot and, depending on the wind of the day, always offer a sheltered and picturesque spot for swimming or relaxing.
