Unique excursion to Punta Troia Castle amidst its beauty and history

Description

The tour includes a guided visit to Punta Troia Castle, an imposing fortification that has also served as a prison over the centuries. This ancient fortress is located on a promontory overhanging the sea and is one of the most evocative and historically relevant places on the island. The castle can be reached by boat starting from the small port of Marettimo, with a 20-minute sail to the beach of Scalo Maestro. From there, one continues on foot along a small paved path, with a walk of about 10-15 minutes.

Once you reach the top, you will begin your guided tour, during which you will explore the Museo delle Carceri, where prominent historical figures, including the important politician Guglielmo Pepe, were imprisoned. In addition, you will visit the room housing a valuable archaeological find: a rostrum from the famous Battle of the Egadi (10 March 241 BC), discovered during an excavation campaign. Admission to the museum costs €5.

Another interesting stop will be a visit to the Museo del Mare, located in the Scalo Vecchio area. This small but very rich museum recounts the maritime tradition of Marettimo, which has a long history of fishing expertise. Today, the link with the community of Monterey, home to many descendants of the Marettimari who emigrated in the 1930s, is still strong. At the museum, one can find numerous testimonies related to the Marettimari’s stories of emigration and life at sea.
